Blockchain for the Energy Transition: the ioCAT project
Blockchain applications are rapidly spreading across the energy sector, with multiple projects emerging all over the world. As you know the Barcelona Bitcoin Community is especially interested in this topic. In this meetup we will present a disruptive project developed and leaded by the Catalan Governement.
The ioCAT is a project led by the Catalan Institute of Energy (Generalitat de Catalunya) that combines ethereum’s blockchain technology with standalone energy micro-grids to empower prosumers by making them energy self-sufficient.
Currently it is not feasible to sellback to the national grid self-produced energy excesses, nor sharing those surpluses with your neighbours. The ioCAT solves that with isolated micro-grids token-managed.
Lluïsa Marsal will present on the ioCAT project and the important role of Catalan local authorities who will act as validator nodes, and Adrià Massanet will introduce the Proof-of-Authority, the consensus algorithm chosen for the ioCAT project.
Maria-Luisa Marsal Llacuna is an architect with two masters and two doctorates in the fields of urban planning and applied ICT (2008, 2013). She worked for the government in the UK and now in Catalunya, at Generalitat’s Catalan Energy Institute. Prior this, she spent fifteen years in the academia developing different research and leadership roles in public universities. She served as UN Habitat III expert and she currently holds a second mandate as a chair at UN’s U4SSC initiative, this time to explore Blockchain applications for cities. Her expertise on blockchain has awarded her with the Presidency of the Blockchain Catalunya Association.
With over 18 years experience within the areas of security, cryptography and digital identity software development, now is focused on Ethereum and decentralized systems. Organizer of the Ethereum Dev Barcelona Meetup.
